Arthenia L. Joyner Scholarship

The Arthenia L. Joyner Scholarship was created in honor of former Florida State Senator Arthenia L. Joyner. A 1968 FAMU College of Law graduate, Arthenia L. Joyner is a true trailblazer. She was the first black lawyer in Polk County and the first female black lawyer in Hillsborough County. She served as a member of the Florida Senate for ten years and in the Florida House of Representatives for six years. In 2012, Senator Joyner received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Black Caucus of State Legislators and the President’s Award from Florida A&M University. She has also received the Warrior For Women Award from the Florida Council Against Sexual Violence (2009 & 2010) and the USF Area Community Civic Association, Inc. Legislative Appreciation Award (2003) and was honored as part of The Luminaries (2016) by the Junior League of Tampa and WEDU. In 2017, Senator Joyner was appointed by the Florida Supreme Court to serve on the Constitution Revision Committee.

SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS
Applicant must be a female.
Applicant must have an undergraduate degree from an HBCU (Historically Black College or University).
Applicant must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
Applicant must demonstrate commitment to social justice, human rights, women’s rights, or civil rights advocacy.
Applicant must have a demonstrated dedication to public service while possessing strong character and leadership abilities, including a letter from an external organization on their letterhead.

The Arthenia L. Joyner Scholarship is a $2,500 non-renewable scholarship.
