The Emanuel Fortune and T. Thomas Fortune Scholarship
The Emanuel Fortune and T. Thomas Fortune Scholarship honors Emanuel Fortune (1833–1897) and his son, Timothy Thomas Fortune (1856–1928), two distinguished leaders born in Jackson County, Florida, who made significant contributions to civil rights, journalism, and public service. Recipients of this scholarship must be from Jackson County, FL and possess a minimum 2.0 GPA, unless incoming student, and be in good standing with the university.
Applicants must write an essay by choosing one of the two men and in one page, respond to the following prompt:
In your own words, introduce the man you selected—who he was, why he is historically significant, and what his legacy means today. Then, reflect on how his life or values connect to your own experiences growing up in Jackson County. What question would you ask him if you had the chance, and how do you imagine he might respond?
